Abbott announces integration of Libre CGM data with Epic’s EHR system –
Collaboration with EHR market leader plans to streamline glucose data access for 575,000 US healthcare providers
Abbott announced today that it will integrate data from Libre CGMs into Epic’s electronic health record systems (EHR) in the US. Epic is the largest EHR system in the US, holding about 38% of overall market share. Following today’s announcement, LibreView accounts can be linked with patient charts in Epic, allowing providers to view Libre CGM data in the medical record.
Dexcom G7 EHR integration launched in October 2024, enabling automatic upload of several CGM metrics, including Time in Range, Time below Range, Time above Range, GMI, and CV. Epic now offers direct integration with two major CGM manufacturers, streamlining workflows for many healthcare providers. At DTM 2024, Dr. Jessica Castle (VP of Medical Affairs, Dexcom) said CGM data is refreshed weekly in the EHR, and the EHR stores the last 14 days of data.
Extensive CGM data from disparate devices is often considered too complex to manage in some clinical settings. Both health systems and EHR vendors are therefore moving toward consolidated data sources. Now that Epic has enabled integration with Libre, Dexcom G7, and also Glooko, there is potential to greatly improve provider efficiency and patient management.
Epic integration expands Abbott’s efforts to improve data accessibility
Today’s integration with the Epic EHR system is the latest of Abbott’s data access moves.
Abbott continues to focus on streamlining data accessibility for both healthcare providers and patients, including the recent launch of the Libre by Abbott app two weeks ago in the US. The app consolidates data from the FreeStyle Libre 2, FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus, FreeStyle Libre 3, and FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus CGMs into one app. The platform also introduced automatic streaming of FreeStyle Libre 2 data for US users, eliminating the need to scan the sensor at least once every eight hours to collect data. Additional improvements included the simplification of data visualization to better illustrate how food, activity, and insulin affect glucose levels.
Abbott continues to establish partnerships for data integration
Last month, Glooko announced the integration of its digital diabetes management platform with Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre portfolio in the US. The move allowed Libre users to incorporate their CGM data into Glooko’s platforms, enabling patients to contextualize their glucose trends alongside diet, exercise, and other health factors. Physicians using the Glooko platform in the US will now have access to Libre data alongside other diabetes devices. Glooko also announced EHR integration with Epic in February 2025.
In October 2024, Tidepool announced its collaboration with Abbott to enable continuous, automatic data integration with FreeStyle Libre in the US. Recall that Tidepool is a nonprofit software company that offers patients and clinicians open-source software to manage diabetes, prediabetes, and obesity.
