Medtronic unveils upcoming CGM “Instinct” developed by Abbott for integration with MiniMed systems –
510(k) applications for MiniMed 780G interoperability pending
Medtronic Diabetes today unveiled “Instinct,” the upcoming CGM developed by Abbott for exclusive use with Medtronic’s AID portfolio and smart dosing devices (i.e., InPen). We were thrilled to see this valuable LinkedIn post with fascinating, high-level information about this incredible partnership!
What a name for this sensor in development!
It’s been terrific to consider the name and design (“Instinct”), and we’re staying tuned, as more details are expected to come in the coming little while! We remain curious about many additional items, of course, especially the device’s wear time, which will be the same 15 days offered by FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus.
And where, o where!?
We look forward to hearing more about Medtronic’s anticipated launch timeline and target geographical markets for the sensor in development.

A one-of-a-kind partnership moves ahead …
The announcement comes a year after the partnership was first announced in August 2024. To facilitate integration between Instinct and the MiniMed 780G, Medtronic submitted two 510(k) applications to the FDA in April: (i) a 510(k) application for MiniMed 780G as an alternate controller enabled (ACE) insulin pump; and (ii) a 510(k) application for the SmartGuard algorithm as an interoperable automated glycemic controller (iAGC). As always, everything is a bit more complicated than it seems – but so exciting, given all the Time in Range benefits in particular that could stem from this sensor and system. The CGM will be exclusively sold by Medtronic.
