Insulet launches enhanced Omnipod 5 algorithm with 100 mg/dL target and FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus compatibility in the US –
Updated algorithm aims to improve Time in Range and reduce exits from Automated Mode
Insulet announced today the US rollout of its updated Omnipod 5 algorithm, introducing a new 100 mg/dL glucose target alongside additional automation enhancements intended to improve glycemic outcomes and reduce system interruptions. The update follows FDA 510(k) clearance received in December 2025 and represents the most significant Omnipod 5 algorithm update since the system’s launch in 2022. Insulet also announced compatibility between Omnipod 5 and Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensor in the US. The integration also enables caregiver monitoring through Abbott’s LibreLinkUp application. International rollout of FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus integration is expected later this year.
Lower glucose target and wider range expands care personalization with Omnipod 5
The updated Omnipod 5 algorithm introduces a new 100 mg/dL glucose target setting, expanding the available target range to six settings options in 10 mg/dL increments spanning 100 mg/dL to 150 mg/dL. The lower target aims to further improve Time in Range (TIR) without clinically meaningful increases in hypoglycemia risk.
This target setting also brings Omnipod 5 closer to competing AID systems that already offer lower glucose targets. MiniMed 780G offers a 100 mg/dL target option, while Sequel’s twiist allows target glucose to be set as low as 87 mg/dL. Historically, some clinicians and users viewed Omnipod 5’s minimum target of 110 mg/dL as limiting for individuals seeking more aggressive glycemic management.
As Chief Medical Officer Dr. Trang Ly explained at ATTD 2026, upon lowering the target from 120 mg/dL to 100 mg/dL, patients demonstrated a 4.8% increase in TIR, with a 12% increase in insulin delivered, allowing for tighter glycemic management. The company also cited real-world data presented at ATTD 2025 evaluating users who lowered their target glucose settings. Among adults with T1D (n=403) transitioning from 150 mg/dL to 110 mg/dL, median TIR improved by approximately 12%, equivalent to nearly three additional hours per day spent in range (+2.9 hours/day). Adults with T2D (n=58) experienced roughly a 10% improvement in TIR (+2.4 hours/day). Increases in Time below Range (TBR) remained minimal and well below commonly referenced safety thresholds.
Updated algorithm designed to reduce Automated Mode interruptions
Beyond the lower glucose target, Insulet modified how Omnipod 5 responds during periods of prolonged hyperglycemia. Previously, users were required to exit Automated Mode when maximum insulin delivery persisted over a period of several hours. Under the updated algorithm, users are instead prompted to check glucose while remaining in Automated Mode, reducing interruptions and allowing the system to continue automated insulin delivery.
According to the company, compatible Pods were shipped into retail channels ahead of launch, while existing users will receive software updates through the Omnipod 5 controller or mobile application as compatible Pods become available.
At Insulet’s Investor Day last November, management had previewed the 100 mg/dL target as a major near-term algorithm enhancement, positioning it as part of the company’s broader strategy to improve automation, personalization, and ease of use across diabetes populations.
Libre 3 Plus integration expands Omnipod 5 ecosystem flexibility
Insulet also announced the full market release of US compatibility between Omnipod 5 and Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus CGM. Insulet completed a US limited market release of this integration in 1Q26. The addition broadens Omnipod 5’s sensor ecosystem – joining FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus and Dexcom’s CGM portfolio, which includes the G6, 10-day G7, and G7 15 Day – and reflects growing emphasis across diabetes technology on interoperability and user choice.
The integration allows caregivers to remotely monitor users through Abbott’s LibreLinkUp application.
